Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian Suite (組曲 ダンタリアンの書架 Kumikyoku Dantalian no Shoka) is a two-disc original soundtrack of The Mystic Archives of Dantalian anime. The songs were composed by Yo Tsuji and produced by Tomoko Saito from GAINAX and Nami Takamura from RodeoDrive. It was released in October 12, 2011.[1]

The soundtrack length is about 90 minutes, with 33 songs, including the TV-size main theme and 8 bonus tracks. It includes illustrations from the anime, the lyrics of Cras numquam scire, an interview with the music producers and commentaries about the development and structure of each track.[2]

The cover illustration was created by Sumie Kinoshita and Hiroyuki Yamaga. It shows Dalian and Hugh almost touching fingers[2], a clear reference to The Creation of Adam, a painting by Italian artist Michelangelo, painted circa 1508–1512.[3] The art also includes the coats of arms of Dalian and the Diswards. The CDs are made to resemble vinyl records.[2]

In the anime industry, usually the music producers create a "music menu" with 30 to 60 songs of one to one and a half minutes for the anime studio to use. Each song fits a different situation, like emotional scenes, action scenes, moments focused on a certain character, etc. The Mystic Archives of Dantalian, however, has no music menu. Its soundtrack was thought, from the beginning, in a suite format, which is unusual. GAINAX suggested the idea during a meeting in February 2011.[2] A suite is an ordered set of individual pieces or movements, tied together by themes or tonalities.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Bokkateki joukei. Tochuu, noumu ni atte samayou was particularly difficult to compose because the team started working on the song in March 11, 2011.[2] The Great East Japan Earthquake was an earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred on that afternoon. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan, and the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began in 1900.[6] Yo Tsuji was struck by a feeling of helplessness. He thought that music was a low priority among people at that moment, but he had no choice but to keep composing.[2]
  • Mori no seidou ni hibiku oto. Furikaeru to no wo fuku suzukaze was composed in Dorian mode since Yo Tsuji was inspired by his favorite song Greensleeves, a traditional English folk song.[2]
  • According to the composer, Noumu no naka ni arawareru shiro. Jouchuu de no kaigyakuteki na butou. Futatabi noumu no naka e kieru was particularly annoying for the musicians playing woodwind instruments. Time in studio recordings is limited, so they had to practice a lot beforehand.[2]
  • Igyou no piano. Sukuenu violin uses a prepared piano. It's a piano that has had its sound altered by placing objects on or between the strings. The invention of the prepared piano is usually traced to John Cage.[2][7]
  • Although the recording of the soundtrack was fun, it was referred as "recording of hell", because the performers often complained about the difficult compositions. There were even songs composed to be performed by machines, such as the ones played by Christabel in Episode 10.[2]
  • Producer Tomoko Saito had goosebumps because the songs were created before the animation but they fitted the scenes perfectly.[2]
  • Although some tracks are too long to use in the scenes, usually they are composed of short pieces, so they are easy to edit into the episodes.[2]
  • The soundtrack was made to be listened in its entirety at once and in order.[2]
  • Cras numquam scire is also included in the single released by Nippon Columbia.
  • The ending theme is not included in the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian Suite.
