Leon, while protecting Alunda, the boss of a crime syndicate, is threatened by an assassin, so he asks for Hugh and Dalian’s help.[1]

A young man and a petite girl stare at the man covered in blood. The latter holds a big knife and an old book. He jumps to kill the young man. The young man dodges while reading an ancient manuscript. The man with a knife is enveloped by magical flames. He laughs, even when the smell of burned flesh fills the air.

Part 1[]

Leon calls for Dalian

Dalian is not happy for being summoned.

In the afternoon, Kamilla unexpectedly sent a driver and a butler in a car for Hugh and Dalian. Such attitude makes Dalian furious. The butler doesn’t explain why the couple was requested. They aren’t in the way to the familiar cottage of Kamilla’s family. Instead, Hugh and Dalian are taken to a dilapidated estate. One can even see bullet holes in the cracked walls. Next to the house there’s an airplane painted in black and white, a Jolly Roger on its tail. Someone shows up to ruffle Dalian’s hair, treating her like a small animal. Dalian hides behind Hugh. Leon looks like a handsome sailor. He’s Kamilla’s older half-brother and Hugh’s childhood friend. Leon is usually abroad. After all, he's despised by many of his relatives, although he’s loved by Kamilla. He’s the one who sent for Hugh and Dalian.

Leon has a wound in his right leg. He had been shot twice. He welcomes Hugh and Dalian to the house. He asks Alunda to prepare the tea. The servants have been dismissed after what happened. Alunda is the boss of a dwindling crime syndicate. She ended up in such position after her father was killed. Leon is arranging her marriage so she can transfer her position to someone else, but a rival organization wants to kill her before the engagement. Leon plans to use Hugh and Dalian’s knowledge about Phantom Books to stop the immortal killer who’s hunting Alunda.

Part 2[]

The next morning, Hugh and Dalian visit the old man’s bookstore to find information about the killer Wesley Clade. According to the old man, Wesley comes from a rich family, but he became a criminal due to his short temper and cruelty. He has no principles. Money is all he’s interested in. He always fulfills his contracts. Wesley killed more than two hundred people. He has many enemies, but no one can kill him. Wounds are instantly healed. Torn limbs instantly grow back. Wesley simply enters through the front door to finish his enemies. He doesn’t need protection or strategy.

The old man explains that the author Zenova Hallward lived in the same dormitory with Wesley Clade. The late writer is known for the vivid descriptions of his characters. Wesley will remain forever as it’s described in Hallward’s work. Wesley will never age. Wounds will disappear, since they are not part of Hallward’s book. Hugh wonders if the immortality will end with the destruction of the Phantom Book. However, the old man shows him a copy of the Template Book written by Hallward. Wesley had arranged for the book to be printed and distributed around the world. Wesley’s immortality will continue as long as a copy of the book exists. Hugh had already lost hope in helping Leon. Dalian asks Hugh to open the book. Hugh checks the first page, amazed.

Part 3[]

Hugh and Dalian return to Leon’s estate by late afternoon. Leon quickly wakes up and grabs his gun, mistaking the couple for enemies. Alunda lies on another couch, her hands bandaged. Leon gave her sleeping pills after she tried to kill herself. Leon wants to save her. He empathizes with the woman, who also had problems caused by family. Hugh reveals that Wesley owns a Phantom Book. They hear the sound of an engine. A man in a bloody cloak drives into the estate. Leon tells Hugh and Dalian to leave through the back door. However, the couple wants to try something.

Part 4[]

Wesley Clade

Hugh and Dalian confront Wesley Clade.

It was getting dark when Hugh and Dalian confronted Wesley Clade. The Template Book had preserved the assassin’s young appearance. Hugh reads the copy of Hallward’s work. The text reveals that Wesley fears to lose his beauty. That’s why he became fear himself and started to kill. Dalian asks about the original book. Wesley removes the manuscript from his pocket. Hugh requests the original Template Book, but the assassin refuses. Hugh shoots Wesley’s shoulder. The flesh quickly recovers, the blood flows back, as if time went backwards. Dalian seems satisfied. She tells Hugh to read the Phantom Book. He removes the Book of a Thousand Sorrows from inside the Labyrinth Library. Wesley feels the danger.

The assassin laughs and jumps at Hugh. The latter dodges the attack while reading in a foreign language. Wesley is enveloped by a fiery whirlwind. He keeps laughing, as if underestimating his opponents. The smell of burned flesh fills the air. The original Template Book is destroyed. The fire disappears. Wesley’s clothes are ruined, but his body is unharmed. He explains that there are thousands of copies of the Template Book around the world preserving his immortality. Hugh shots Wesley’s right hand. This time, the flesh doesn't regenerate. The assassin’s face is distorted by pain and fear. The years finally affected his beauty. He tries to collect the ashes at the ground to recover his Phantom Book. Hugh affirms that soon people will learn that Wesley lost his immortality. Wesley’s enemies will take revenge on him. The assassin yells in horror and runs away.

Part 5[]

Leon is about to leave for the capital in his plane on a Sunday morning. Alunda waits in the back seat, nervous. Leon thanks Hugh and Dalian. Hugh shows a copy of the Template Book to Leon. The book is full of typos. It seems like no one bothered to calibrate the machines before starting the production. That’s why Wesley’s immortality ended when the original Template Book was destroyed. Leon bids farewell to Hugh and Dalian. The plane takes off. Leon and Alunda will be sailing for the colonies.[1]

  • When Wesley's wound is magically healed, Hugh quotes from the Book of Common Prayer by saying "ashes to ashes, dust to dust".[1][2]
  • The chapter has similarities with The Picture of Dorian Gray, a Gothic and philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde, first published complete in 1890.[3]
    • In the book, the handsome Dorian Gray is the subject of a full-length portrait in oil by Basil Hallward. Dorian understands that his beauty will one day fade, so he expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian pursues a libertine life of varied amoral experiences while staying young and beautiful.[3]
    • While Dorian's beauty is depicted in a picture[3], Wesley's appearance is described in a book.[1]
    • Basil Hallward is a painter[3], while Zenova Hallward is a writer.[1]
    • The Picture of Dorian Gray is set in Victorian England[3]. The Mystic Archives of Dantalian is set after the Great War.[4]
    • In The Picture of Dorian Gray, although Dorian stays the same, his picture gradually changes, revealing his ageing and vices.[3] The Template Book doesn't change.[1]
    • In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian stabs his own picture and ends up killing himself.[3] In The Template Book, Wesley's Phantom Book is destroyed. He loses his powers, but he survives.[1]
    • Dorian and Wesley were known for their virtues in the past, but both became corrupted.[1][3]
