Chapter 5 (light novel 4)

It resurrects the reader.

Hildegard Arkin

Decorative Plywood of Merneith is a Phantom Book used by Hildegard to preserve her soul after her death. The witch planned to resurrect using the Phantom Book and the body of her daughter Elisha. The Phantom Book is present in the Phantom Book Thief story.

It’s a rare, ancient book written on wooden tablets. It has a light-colored cover.[1]

Hildegard was possessed by the Phantom Books from her grandfather’s collection. She became a witch that kills people to increase her power. Her brother, Ben Arkin, locked Hildegard and the Phantom Books inside the basement of the Reizl Castle to stop her atrocities. Among the Phantom Books inside the dark basement was the Decorative Plywood of Merneith. Before dying, she used the Phantom Book to preserve her soul. Then, she planned to use her daughter Elisha as a vessel for her own resurrection. Hildegard assumed the same appearance as Elisha, becoming the doppelgänger of her own daughter.[1]

Merneith was a consort and a regent of Ancient Egypt during the First Dynasty. She may have been the first female pharaoh and the earliest queen regnant in recorded history. Her rule occurred around 2,950 BC for an undetermined period.[2]

The Decorative Plywood of Merneith preserves someone’s soul. The Phantom Book contains the secrets about transmigration of souls. The reader can put his soul into someone else’s body. The target doesn’t need to be in the same room. The reader becomes a doppelgänger of the target. In this state, the owner of the Phantom Book is able to wander the realm of the living as a soul, appearing and disappearing at will. The reader is completely resurrected if he can kill the target and take his body. If the Phantom Book is destroyed, the user’s death is definitive.[1]

Hildegard, as Elisha’s doppelgänger, killed many soldiers inside the basement of the Reizl Castle. However, before disappearing, the witch affirms that the Phantom Book needs to be filled with more hate.

The police go to the Reizl Castle to try to catch Mithril, the Phantom Book Thief. Hildegard kills six policemen and two servants at the library. She affirms that Elisha’s life will be hers. The witch disappears after a brief confrontation against Hal and Flamberge. Hal deduces that the Scarlet Robe is using a Phantom Book to act as Elisha’s doppelgänger. Ben eventually reveals that the doppelgänger is Hildegard, her young sister who was possessed by her grandfather’s Phantom Books. Ben locked Hildegard and the Phantom Books inside the basement of the Reizl Castle in order to stop her atrocities.

Hildegard is found inside the basement. She picks up the Decorative Plywood of Merneith on the floor next to her. Hal recognizes the Phantom Book. Now he knows that Hildegard, right before death, used its power to move her soul into Elisha’s body. While gently hugging the Phantom Book, Hildegard affirms that she will take Elisha’s life and completely resurrect in the little girl's body. Hildegard attacks Hal and the others. In the midst of the confusion, Mithril takes the Phantom Book from Hildegard's hands. The thief provokes the witch, showing her the Phantom Book with a mischievous smile. The Decorative Plywood of Merneith was keeping Hildegard in that world. Mithril throws the Phantom Book to Hal. The Book Burning Officer uses his staff to destroy Hildegard’s soul and Phantom Book, enveloping both in blue flames.[1]
