"Winning Strategy" is the 2nd fragment of The Mystic Archives of Dantalian light novel, volume 2. The special chapter is also labeled as “The Gambler’s Fallacy”.

A handsome man and a petite girl were at a casino, when a young gentleman approached them. The latter says that he is using a Phantom Book to learn the results of every gamble.[1]

At a gambling table in the hall of a casino, there is a petite girl and a handsome man. The unhappy girl had lost all her chips, while the man had a chip case filled to the brim. A gentleman notices how lucky he is. The former explains that the casino allows the visitors to win at first, only to obtain a profit later, when larger bets are made. The gentleman warns the handsome man about such trickery. The gentleman, however, has luck on his side. He’s carrying a box filled with chips in his right hand. Oddly, there’s a book in his left hand.

The gentleman reveals that he’s been using a Phantom Book to discover all the results of the gambles. He’s someone who can obtain any kind of information. He learned the location of the Phantom Book and bought it from the previous owner for a large sum of money. Now, he sees that his efforts weren’t in vain. The gentleman is ready to leave for his next gamble. He invites the couple to join him. However, they already have an appointment. When the gentleman leaves, the petite girl calls him stupid.

At the office of the casino’s manager, the boss gladly welcomes the couple. He smiles at the handsome man, calling him “Professor”. The manager thanks the handsome man for the business' success. Before the Professor’s plan, the visitors were careful. Everyone knew that the casino would let them win several rounds, only to recover all the money plus profit as their excitement grew. Now, thanks to the Professor, the cassino was spreading a new rumor. People would hear about a Phantom Book with records of all gambles. They would search such a book and buy it. Then, the casino would let them win a few rounds. After some time, the casino would make them lose, taking their money. Even the selling of the books is profitable.

The boss tells his subordinates to bring a money bag to the Professor. While explaining his plan, the latter affirms that people are willing to believe they have special information, specially those who deem themselves above others. Before leaving, the couple watches the gentleman at the hall of the casino. He’s holding his book with a dazed expression. His chip case, once full, is now empty. People around want to beat him, since they also had lost money after betting with the gentleman. The gentleman causes a scene, saying that he is being cheated. He’s detained by security and dragged out.[1]

  • First time the Professor is mentioned by his title.[1]
    • It's his debut in a special chapter.[1]
  • The gambler's fallacy is the erroneous belief that if a particular event occurs more frequently than normal during the past it is less likely to happen in the future, when it has otherwise been established that the probability of such events does not depend on what has happened in the past. It's commonly associated with gambling, wherein it may be believed for example that the next dice roll is more than usually likely to be six because there have recently been less than the usual number of sixes.[2]
