Phantom Books are records of forbidden knowledge. They are magical objects that can curse or bless. They are prominent artifacts in The Mystic Archives of Dantalian series. In the manga, sometimes they are referred as Black Books (黒い本 Kuroi Hon).

About[]

Phantom Books contain ancient knowledge of demons. They can be seen as lost technologies of gods.[1] Phantom Books choose their owners. Phantom Books are attracted to people who need their powers. If an unworthy person tries to use Phantom Books, he will fall under the influence of its magical power. The rightful reader will be blessed, while the wrong person will be cursed, his soul corrupted. If a Phantom Book is used by the wrong reader, or is kept unsealed for a long time, Phantom Books distort reality in unexpectedly ways, violating logic and physical laws.[2][3] That’s why they must be sealed inside the Labyrinth Library. Inside the Labyrinth Library, there are 900,666 sealed Phantom Books. A Phantom Book leaves the place only when a worthy reader is found.[4] In the manga, an unworthy reader will be attacked by magic even if he only touches the Phantom Book. The victim can be pushed back, be disfigured or die. In this adaptation, the Phantom Books have hidden powers that are released when the reader is under stress.[5][6]

Even the chosen readers succumb to the magical power after a long time using a Phantom Book.[2][3] Readers feel exhausted after reading powerful Phantom Books.[7] Key-keepers such as Hugh, Hal and the Professor are loved by the Phantom Books and are able to use their powers as much as the true readers.[8] Although they offer magical powers, Phantom Books are as fragile as common books.[9] Like many other forms of magic, the power of Phantom Books is affected by the phase of the moon. Phantom Books are especially dangerous to unworthy readers in a night of full moon.[3]

Phantom Books are only records of forbidden knowledge. Without someone to read and understand their content, magic power will not materialize. Phantom Books exist not only in written form. The forbidden knowledge will have effect no matter the way used to convey information. Methods which don’t use letters, such as Braille, Morse code and Quipu, can transmit the forbidden knowledge of the Phantom Book. Elviscarillon and Phantom Scores are examples of Phantom Books based on sound waves.[10][11] Phantom Books can be copied and even published.[12][13] Some Phantom Books exist in many copies.[9] Phantom Books can be transcribed into different formats and the copies will work like the original if the magical mechanism is preserved.[12] If the copies have typos, they will not work as Phantom Books.[13] In the manga, Phantom Books are books with simple dark covers.[2]

There are unusual Phantom Books. Faceless Book is a Phantom Book in the form of a mask.[14] A parrot became a Phantom Book and its own reader.[12] Books of Royal Power are living, sentient minerals and one of the oldest Phantom Books in the world.[15] Not only humans use Phantom Books. For instance, fantastic creatures such as the sea devils use the Book of Humanization to disguise themselves as humans.[16] The Pioneer Book is a Phantom Book created by a being from another dimension.[8]

Some people, especially influential and rich ones, know about the existence of Phantom Books. Others heard about their existence, but deem them as rumors. According to Dalian, Phantom Books shouldn’t exist in this world.[2][3] Phantom Books offer different effects to the reader, to his target or both. There are Phantom Books that allow the reader to attack someone with fire, lightning, wind, cold weather and other elements. There are Phantom Books that offer healing, resurrection, immortality, wisdom, protection, instantaneous transportation, eternal youth, time travel, among others.[3] More than one Phantom Book can be used at the same time.[12] This makes Phantom Books valuable to those who wish love, status, happiness or money. Many fake Phantom Books are sold to these greedy people.[7]

Phantom Book Egg[]

Phantom Books are created with demon wisdom and devilish rituals.[17] According to Rasiel, the birth of a Phantom Book requires an author and strong feelings such as madness and fear. War is an appropriate place to create a Phantom Book, since it generates constant despair. Madness turns into the magical power of the Phantom Book. The strong emotions and desires of humans distort reality itself. When the author’s feelings aren’t intense enough, it’s said that the Phantom Book is incomplete. At this stage, the artifact is called Phantom Book Egg (幻書の卵 Maboroshi-sho no Tamago) or Phantom Draft (幻稿 Maboroshi Kō).[1][18] Phantom Drafts are usually more unstable and unpredictable compared to Phantom Books. For instance, the Book of Connection unexpectedly merged the souls of Emilie and Eva into the same body.[18]

Background[]

According to Rasiel, the book of the angel Rasiel was copied into many books. The original book, the Sefer Rasiel, containing all the secrets of earth and heaven, ceased to exist. The angel himself also vanished. The angel shall be resurrected when all secrets, the Phantom Books, are put together, sealed inside the Rasiel’s Bookshelf. Rasiel wants to create Phantom Drafts and obtain complete Phantom Books in order to spread misery and fear throughout the world and to recreate the Sefer Rasiel.[1][19] Dantalian, the owner of the Labyrinth Library, was the demon who turned the forbidden knowledge into Phantom Books.[3]

Wesley used to lend Phantom Books to those who needed it. A return date was specified so that the Phantom Book could be returned to the Labyrinth Library before it changed reality, corrupted the reader’s soul and caused a tragedy.[2] Hugh and Dalian are also seen lending Phantom Books.[19] They usually investigate strange events to find Phantom Books and seal them.[20] The police used to consult Wesley in cases related to Phantom Books.[21] Mithril is a thief who’s after Phantom Books.[22] Shura is a photojournalist who tries to gather information about Phantom Books and the Labyrinth Library.[20] Book Burning Officers are agents who believe that humanity doesn’t need Phantom Books, so their objective is to burn them all. Hal can use a Phantom Book to power his staff.[23] In contrast, Rasiel and the Professor indiscriminately offer Phantom Books to humans.[14] The Professor wants to explore the powers of Phantom Books to increase the power of his homeland.[18]

Trivia[]

  • Book of Fairy and Book of the Salamander's Seal are Phantom Books authored by Paracelsus.[3][24]
  • There are no Phantom Book Eggs exclusive to the adaptations or spin-offs, with exception of the Book of Warmth, shown in Dalian-chan's Bookshelf.[25]
  • Many Phantom Books are based in mythology, literature, religion, folklore and history.
  • Braille is a tactile writing system used by people who are visually impaired.[26]
    • Morse code is a method used in telecommunication to encode text characters as standardized sequences of two different signal durations, called dots and dashes[27]
    • Quipu are recording devices fashioned from strings historically used by a number of cultures in the region of Andean South America. The Inca people used them for collecting data and keeping records, monitoring tax obligations, properly collecting census records, calendrical information, and for military organization. The cords stored numeric and other values encoded as knots, often in a base ten positional system. A quipu could have only a few or thousands of cords.[28]
