The Great Queen Poem is a Phantom Book used by Hugh to prolong a football match and give Hal and Flamberge enough time to confront the post-war reconstruction terrorists. It’s present in the Book of Atonement story.
The Phantom Book was never described in the light novel.[1]
Background[]
The Phantom Book is contained inside the Labyrinth Library. It describes the secret spell of the goddess Morrígan[1], a figure from Irish mythology who influences the outcome of war. The name is translated as "great queen" or "phantom queen". The goddess is associated with war and fate, especially with foretelling doom, death or victory in battle.[2]
Powers[]
It freely manipulates the result of a dispute. For instance, it was used by Hugh to extend the duration of a football match by one hour. No one at the stadium other than Hugh and Dalian noticed that the endgame was impossibly delayed. Players showed an unusual excitement, with no signs of fatigue. The Phantom Book influenced the final score, which went from 7-0 to 15-15.[1]
Plot[]
Hal and Flamberge need more time to stop the post-war reconstruction terrorists, who plan to distribute fake newspapers throughout the capital to turn people into zombies after the FA Cup finals. The match will end in just over a dozen minutes. Hugh and Dalian decide to proceed to the stadium to delay the end of the match. They enter the room at the center of the grandstand where they can use the microphone of the stadium announcer. Hugh reads The Great Queen Poem to everyone using the stadium speakers, making the match one hour longer. The stadium gains a strange atmosphere. Players, spectators, referees and managers never noticed it. Players are running nonstop, showing an unusual excitement, with no sign of fatigue. The stadium organizers and attendants are enthusiastic. Soon the score went from 7-0 to 15-15. Dalian tells Hugh that it's time to wake them up. He had managed to control the game, changing its result. He closes the Phantom Book. The tournament rules said that the match wouldn’t have extra time. Therefore, the unbelievable score wouldn’t be in the official records.[1]
Trivia[]
